Troubleshooting Noise and Vibration Issues of a Metro Braking System

Abstract Purpose The braking system used on a recently upgraded metro vehicle showed very high low-frequency noise and vibrations levels in service affecting passengers’ comfort leading to both brake calliper lever failures premature wear of pads. characteristics the phenomenon were such that it was classified as groan type. As pads with different tested trying attenuate issue without success, paper describes approach adopted by authors tackle issue. Methods dynamic behaviour all components involved during phase (wheelset, callipers, discs part bogie frame) analysed numerical simulations tests service, finding coincidence natural frequencies wheelset support. this resonance believed be root cause problem, number structural modifications proposed. Results Conclusions After careful selection process included robustness sensitivity analyses, accepted modification proved effective solving applied satisfaction whole fleet.
